Some creatures do not walk toward you — they arrive. And the water, the darkness, the very air parts to let them through.
Regnans captures a dark stallion charging head-on through exploding water against absolute darkness — a sovereign form materialising from the void. Rim light traces every ridge of muscle while thousands of backlit droplets form a luminous halo around a body made almost entirely of shadow. The direct, unflinching gaze commands with the authority of something that has never been denied passage.
Most photographs of horses in water celebrate the splash — the spectacle. With Regnans, the water is not the subject. It is the herald — the annunciation of something approaching that cannot be stopped.
I positioned the camera low, nearly at the waterline, to make the approaching form feel monumental. The severe backlighting traces the musculature while leaving the body in shadow — a form defined not by what the light reveals, but by what it chooses to withhold.
The result is less a photograph and more a heraldic device — rendered in silver and obsidian. A sovereign materialising from the void, crowned by light, announced by chaos.
